Day 21, Lost in Canada
Adam’s parents were vacationing in Vancouver, which was right across the
Canadian border. This meant that we
would be able to sleep on the floor in their hotel room! We were so excited to be able to sleep in a
climate controlled room. No bugs, no
sunlight in the mornings, and no one to run you off of their land. We talked about it all day.
The ride through Washington
State towards Canada was
plagued with mechanical problems and things became delayed. It was dark before we got to the border. We didn’t get 5 miles passed the border when
Rodger’s bike stalled. Because Adam was
leading, he didn’t notice. He also
happened to be the only one that knew where his parent's hotel was. Rodger and I waited 15 minutes for Adam, but
he never came back. No problem I
thought, I’ll just call him on my cell phone.
I reached into my pocket and felt around for the phone…nothing
there. Turns out my cell phone had
fallen out of my pocket somewhere in the last few-hundred miles and was likely
in many pieces on the side of the highway.
Bummer. There was a pay phone at
a rest area we had passed just a quarter mile behind us. There was no traffic so we made quick dart
back to the rest area going the wrong way on the Canadian equivalent to an
interstate. Then we realized that we
didn’t know Adam's number…it was saved to my cell phone. Between the two of us, we could remember what
letter the name of the hotel started with, and sort of what it sounded like. Based on this, we decided to ride around
aimlessly and see if we recognized the name of any hotels.
Several unproductive hours later, we took a
break to talk it up with some Canadian police and hangout with a gas station attendant. He sent us away with some free coffee and we
continued on. 6:30AM rolled around and
we decided we had enough. We pulled into
a park. Not wasting any time looking for
a place to sleep, I choose a nice park lounging bench and Rodger went with a
bus stop waiting bench.
