Wednesday 4/26

J and I had the unique pleasure of being guest speakers at Debose Middle school in Summerville, SC. We received an email from Ron Jenkins who teaches there asking if we would mind coming in. Both my and J’s parents have taught. It’s in our blood. We jumped at the chance.

We assembled a little show and tell for the kids: the satellite phone straight from the 80’s, the GPS and a slideshow of pictures from J’s Alaska trip. Other than that we hadn’t prepared for it. We’d been busy taking care of other issues for the trip. We arrived and I looked at J and said “So how long do we have?” J replied “an hour.” Oh my. We hadn’t planned on that.

Instead of one class of kids, we soon found 3 full classes to be huddled in the space before us. They were everywhere: on the floor, on desks, on tables in the back… J finished his introduction and asked for questions. Ten hands shot into the air, and no less than five were up from that time on until an hour and a half later when the class had to leave. They were really excited, which in turn made us excited. One of the teachers taped the entire spectacle.  The class had really good questions (What are you going to eat? How many times will you need to fill up on gas? How much will this cost?) and really kept us on our toes.
